Description
Hike for almost 2 miles down the gently descending Rayado Creek valley along the east side of the creek to the west-bound trail for Crooked Creek and start up an easy incline. Reach the Crooked Creek homestead at about 2-1/2 miles from Comanche Creek. Water is available at Crooked Creek, but the spring runs slowly and supplies all the water for the entire camp.
Leaving Crooked Creek, continue ascending, crossing the source of Buck Creek and to a 10,000 foot plateau above Bear Canyon. Along the way, do your conservation project: 3 hours of trail work.
Continue to follow the Philmont property line south, now descending, then turn east as you cross Turkey Creek headwaters and take the new trail into Apache Springs.
On the Way
Crooked Creek has homesteading with a cabin tour and perhaps a chance to do some typical chores such as wood cutting and feeding the chickens. Water is available, but the same slow spring supports the camp staff and the crews staying there, so conserve water.
On the trail between Buck Creek and Bear Canyon, you'll perform your conservation project: trail work. Conservation is scheduled at specific times (usually morning and afternoon), so plan your day accordingly.
